Train to Teach

This specialist certificate is designed for qualified English language teachers and is designed to equip them with the skills and knowledge to teach English to children and adolescents in the age range 7-16.

TYLEC is now available at Language Link Hanoi after meeting Trinity’s rigorous validation criteria. All TYLEC courses are validated and moderated by Trinity College London.

TYLEC courses are designed to build knowledge, understanding and confidence in areas such as using resources, classroom management and lesson planning. They also raise awareness of the context and theory of language teaching and learning to children and adolescents. Courses consist of over 50 hours of input, assisted lesson planning time and tutorials. There are also five assessed observations (one diagnostic and four assessed) as well as opportunities to observe experienced teachers working with young learner groups.

In addition, participants have to keep a teaching practice journal and complete an externally-assessed assignment on materials development. Validated courses build on pedagogical and practical skills and also give participants a firm foundation for self-evaluation and further professional development.

Courses are generally scheduled Monday-Friday, over four-five weeks.

Mornings are given over to input sessions, covering topics related to teaching methodology and practical teaching skills for young learners, and lesson planning. Afternoons are dedicated to supervised teaching practice, tutor feedback and assisted lesson planning.

In addition to this, candidates will be required to attend six hours of observations of experienced teachers and 2 hours of peer observation, usually scheduled in the evenings.

The TYLEC course is intensive in nature and outside timetabled hours candidates will need to dedicate time across the course (evenings and weekends) for the required research and lesson preparation.
